美國人很喜歡吃土豆，特別是剛從烤箱里拿出來的一個個熱氣騰騰的土豆。
Hot potato是什么意思？大家都知道hot的意思是熱或燙。Potato就是土豆。熱的土豆固然好吃，但是它會燙你的手，你會想法馬上甩掉的。 Hot potato作為俗語，它的意思就是一個爭論很激烈的問題，沒有一個人愿意為它承擔責任。
來看看這倆個句子：
1.He learned that his idea would cost such a pile of money, he dropped it like a hot potato. 當他意識到他的方案需要很大一筆經費時，馬上放棄了。 老板剛一允許這個年輕人在他那里工作，他就意識到引來了麻煩。
2.Soon after he allowed the young man to work in his office, the boss realized that he had been handed a hot potato.
